Granta Design was founded as a spin-out from Cambridge University by Professor Mike Ashby, a world-renowned authority in materials engineering, and Dr David Cebon, a leading expert in the application of materials information to engineering applications.
In building the Granta team, we remain committed to technical excellence and to a positive and customer-focused attitude that delivers the solutions and support that our partners and customers need. The result is a high-caliber

Selected management biographies

Mike is Professor in the Department of Engineering
at the University of Cambridge. He is a world-renowned authority
on engineering
materials and the author/co-author of the best-selling textbooks, Engineering Materials I & II and Materials Selection in
Mechanical Design and of over 200 papers on mechanisms of plasticity and fracture, powder compaction,
mechanisms of wear, methodologies for materials selection, and the
modeling
of material shaping processes, among other topics. He is recipient
of numerous awards and honors including Fellow of the Royal Society and
Member of the
American Academy of Engineering. Prior to Cambridge, he was a professor
at Harvard University and held academic positions in Germany and France.
He
is also co-founder of Granta and directs development of Granta’s CES
EduPack. |

Dave is co-founder of Granta Design and has 20 years experience at the
cutting edge of materials and process selection methodology and
software. He is the architect of all generations of Granta Design's
products. He is also Professor of Mechanical Engineering at
Cambridge University, and leads
a research group concerned with road transport and the micro-mechanics
of road construction materials. He has a PhD in Engineering from Cambridge
University and a Bachelors degree from Melbourne University, Australia,
and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. |

Patrick joined the company as a non-executive director in 1997 and began his current position in 1999. An experienced software entrepreneur and business manager, his previous venture (now part of Accelrys Inc.) was a multimillion dollar success and employs many scientists and engineers in the Cambridge area. It too was a spin-off from university research and created the leading software in its field worldwide. He has post-doctoral experience in materials and polymer science, a PhD in chemistry from Cambridge University, and has held positions at ICI and Unilever. |

Richard has twenty-five years experience of sales worldwide in software and hardware companies. He was International Sales Director for PAFEC - the British CAD/CAM software company - and then spent seven years with Molecular Simulations Inc. (MSI) where he grew a sales force serving European markets for life sciences, pharmaceutical, materials and chemicals. Richard has also worked or consulted on managing and expanding sales operations, sales and marketing strategy and general business management at companies including Genomica, Scimagix and KPMG Management Consulting. He has also been involved in IPOs and acquisitions at MSI and Genomica. He is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from University College, London. |
